Bosra(Arabic:بصرىBuṣrā, also spelledBostra,Busrana,Bozrah,Bozra) where Mohammad first learned of Christianity and officially knownBusra al-ShamArabic:بصرى الشام) is a town in southernSyria, administratively belonging to theDaraa Districtof theDaraa Governorate.
Bosra's inhabitants are predominantly Sunni Muslims, although the town has a smallShia Muslimcommunity.
Bosra has an ancient history and during theRomanera it was a prosperous provincial capital. It continued to be administratively important during theIslamic era, but became gradually less prominent during the Ottoman era. Today, it is a major archaeological site and has been declared byUNESCOas aWorld Heritage Site.
보스라는 다마스쿠스 남쪽으로 140km 지점에 있으며 검은 현무암이 어지럽게 흩어진 비옥한 평원에 위치해있다.
한때는 지방 교역과 순례의 통로에 위치하여 번성했지만 현재는 잊혀진 곳이 되어있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 이곳은 오래된 로마 건물 주위에 신비롭고 놀라운 모습으로 서있다. 도시는 거의 검은 현무암으로 세워졌으며 이들 대부분은 더 오래된 건물에서 뜯어온 것이다.
이곳에는 또한 세계에서 가장 잘 보존된 로마 극장 중 하나가 있다. 이 극장은 특히 요새화되어 성으로 변했다는 점에서 특이하다. 아홉 개의 탑이 건물 주위에 서있으며 깊게 패인 해자로 성을 보호하고 있다.
성안에서는 장대한 15000석의 극장을 볼 수 있다. 이곳이 극장으로 이용될 당시에는 대리석으로 정면을 만들고 비단으로 덮여 있었으며 연극 중에는 관객이 편안하게 볼 수 있도록 미세하고 향기가 있는 안개를 날려보냈다.
